Concepts of Environmental Education in Basic Education Schools of Technical Courses in Mechanical and Loads Transportation in the Campus Santos Dumont: a conscious student? A critical analysis through the pedagogical practices

The concept of environmental education has evolved over the last decades. Theoretically , exceeded the conservation side, because left a limited view of the environment which man was not part, to a broad view , a criticism that includes man (institutions, values), the nature and the "tension" between them (climate change, pollution and depletion of natural resources). This tension that may negatively influence the environment they live in (climate change , pollution, limitation of natural resources)

This work focuses on environmental education, through the analysis of a teacher experience report that was present and active in schools in recent decades. Wanted to find out if these concepts came up to her and turned his practice . Also analyzed some actions of public policies in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais and was concluded that despite the state investment , especially after the establishment of Agenda 21 event, which was established during the congress Rio 92, the environmental education pedagogical practices continue favoring the present classical conservationist and do not contribute to the transformation of society . It is also concluded that although documents generated in the major events on the subject, national and international, and public policies of environmental education when it comes to practice, it seems that it is always for the "other" do. The man has not even learned to respect and preserve itself . That concepts of environmental education and environment have been worked of Technical Courses in Mechanical and Loads Transportation? They have been effective in raising awareness of the technical student? This study presents an analysis of the menu of the subjects of the courses and semi-structured interviews with teachers committed to the topic. We conclude that the environmental education work in focuses on specific topics limited to the professional field and not in the formation of man with a critical view of the reasons that cause the domination of the human being and accumulation mechanisms the capital.

Development of climate adaptation measures as a participative process involving citizens in a neighbourhood in Berlin, Germany

In the context of global climate change, extreme weather events such as long-lasting heat waves or intense rainfall events are very likely to increase in their occurrence. This affects especially the urban population in densely built-up neighbourhoods of large cities. To mitigate these effects, comprehensive climate adaptation measures are required.

In order to get local residents involved in the development and implementation of such measures, a participative approach can be an innovative strategy in urban planning. This is tested within the “KiezKlima” project (English: "Neighbourhood climate"), using the urban quarter “Brunnenviertel-Brunnenstrasse” in Berlin, Germany, as test bed. The project is collaboratively carried out by partners from science, consultancy, administration and district work and funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety. The participative approach builds on existing structures and strategies of the neighbourhood management, involving the local stakeholders, i.e. residents, non-profit organisations, a housing company and private enterprises.

The basis for the development of climate adaptation measures is a comprehensive examination of the climate conditions in the neighbourhood. The seasonal climate conditions as well as the variations due to climate extremes with regard to the living conditions in the pilot area are investigated. Spatially, hot spots that exhibit particular extremes due to micro-scale characteristics, such as playgrounds without shade during hot weather, are identified using micro-scale atmospheric simulations and considering the habits of the residents. Beside atmospheric modelling techniques, observational data will be used and new measurements will be set up, including measurements at schools and retirement homes to address vulnerable groups. Possible adaptation measures are developed, discussed and planned together with the local residents and scientifically evaluated in terms of their effectiveness in reducing negative effects of weather extremes. Appropriate selected measures will be implemented, also involving the residents.

Design thinking and urban planning projects: towards new climatic services for climate change adaptation?

The purpose of the Adaptatio research project was to suggest a novel methodology to take into consideration the issue of adaptation to climate change during the design process of urban planning projects. It is necessary to think adaptation and mitigation in a conjunctive way and upstream, notably, of the design process of urban planning projects. This suggested methodology is based on the development of a novel and simple tool to assess mainly energy but also water consumptions of an urban planning project following different climatic scenarios.

In addition to this quantitative information, another objective of Adaptatio is to realize an exploratory research in close cooperation with operational stakeholders involved into the urban planning design process. The purpose of this cooperation is to work on the possibility to create a new organization of the reflection framework with the active participation of all the concerned stakeholders in order to get them involved into the innovation process of anticipation of future situation and thus envisage jointly the adaptability and the scalability of an urban planning project. This new organization will also be realized based on the participation of a new type of stakeholder: the designer, the work of whom should facilitate the cooperation done on an urban planning project integrating the question of adaptation to climate change during the design process, based on insights coming from the design thinking theory.

Indeed, among the set of innovation process theories and concepts coming from the business and management world, i.e. outside the urban planning sphere, we identified the Design Thinking theory. Design Thinking appeared thirty years ago, was standardized by Tim Brown CEO of IDEO Design Company, and nowadays is integrated within the contemporary practice of design and engineering, placing each individual (consumer, user, etc.) at the center of the process. This theory was chosen within the frame of the Adaptatio project as the starting point in order to assess the potential to implement the initial basis of such a reflection framework based on Design Thinking principles.

Thus, within Adaptatio the purpose was to set an appropriate framework to favor exchange with the stakeholders of a selected urban planning project (Tolbiac Chevaleret, 13th District of Paris, France) on several topics like: the current state of their knowledge on climate change, mitigation and adaptation , the barriers that can restrain their project’s adaptation to climate change, their operational needs in order to integrate adaptation to climate change and establish suitable technical specifications with adaptation to climate change measures, etc. Thus the aim was to create the necessary conditions in order to jointly think on the possibilities of adaptation to climate change of their project. For this purpose, “technical brainstorming” workshops were organized within the frame of Adaptatio. Therefore, the objective was to identify the main passive and active prevention, protection and adaptation principles, the main categories of technological solutions likely to handle climate change, and notably, to better seize the “designer’s” job profile who would insure the interface between researchers and operational stakeholders, in order to collectively formalize the climate change “problem” that the project under study will have to cope with and thus succeed in formalizing adaptation options to foresee.

Thus in this presentation the main characteristics of the design thinking theory will be introduced as well as Design Thinking’s main recent contributions to the classical approaches and Design Thinking’s limitations. Secondly, the main steps of its implementation will be presented and identified applications in urban planning case studies will be portrayed. Then, the methodology set up for Adaptatio brainstorming workshops will be developed, the main workshop outcomes will be highlighted and design thinking theory inputs for Adaptatio methodology will be emphasized. Last, some first prescriptions on how to apply design thinking theory into urban planning will be proposed.
