General information about La Reunion Island

The island of La Réunion is, together with the islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues, part of the Mascareignes archipelago.
It is situated in the Indian Ocean at 55°29' longitude East and 21°5' latitude South.
From a bird's eyes view, Paris is at a distance of 9,180 km, Tananarive of 880 km, Port Louis of 210 km, Johannesburg of 2,825 km, and Bombay of 4,600 km.
The oval-shaped island of La Réunion has a surface of 2,512 km2. Its biggest axis, about 70 km long, ranges from the north-west to the south-east. Its coasts, little scattered, stretch to about 207 km only.
Its beaches are about 40 kilometres long, one part opening to the sea (Etang-Salé, Saint Paul), the other part protected from the coral banks that are along the western and southern border in an interrupted manner (for about 25 km).
La Réunion is a volcanic island (the Fournaise volcano is periodically active) and mountainous (the peak, the Piton des Neiges, has a height of 3,069 m).

For the period of the training course, the climatological characteristics of Sainte Clotilde are as follows:

Daily mean min temperature: 20.9°CMean number of days of precipitation: 6 days
Temperatures are much cooler at altitude. For instance, the mean maximum and minimum temperatures are 18.8°C and 9.1°C, respectively, at the Plaine des Cafres which is situated at an altitude of 1,550 metres.
